The Eritrean Ascari were indigenous soldiers of Eritrea fighting for the Italian Army from 1889-1941.
An "askari" is a soldier serving in European colonial armies in Central and East Africa. Also, "ascar" is Arabic for "soldier".
The Ascari wore red fezzes and were often deployed as camel cavalry. They also wore waist sashes.
